Eugene Mc Carthy
Born: 1916 | Died: 2005
Politician
Eugene Joseph McCarthy was born as one of four children to a mother of German descent and a father of Irish descent in Watkins, Minnesota.
McCarthy graduated with a master’s degree from the University in Minnesota in 1939. Before his political career, he taught at several public schools in Minnesota, North Dakota and at St. Johns until 1943. McCarthy subsequently worked for the Military Intelligence Division of the War Department as a technical assistant during World War II.
From 1949-1959, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives on Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Ticket. Like many other liberals, he was skeptical of the US policies in Vietnam. McCarthy served in the Senate from 1959 to 1971 and was a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, among others. In 1968, McCarthy lost his bid to become the Democratic candidate for President of the United States to Hubert H. Humphrey.
