Germans have had a role in shaping religious life in America. During the early days of immigration, people came to the U.S. to find religious freedom. Many of those who fled belonged to various Protestant faiths that surfaced around the time of the Reformation that had been instigated by Martin Luther. Nowadays, the Pope is the most recognized religious personality from Germany.
