Albert Einstein was born into a Jewish family in Ulm in southern Germany. Shortly thereafter his family moved to Switzerland where he studied mathematics and physics and in 1905, Einstein obtained a doctor’s degree from the University of Zurich.

In 1914, Einstein became a German citizen again and taught at the University of Berlin. He completed a great deal of research and papers which contributed greatly to the field of Physics. He received honorary doctorate degrees in science, medicine and philosophy from many European and American universities. He also gained numerous awards in recognition of his work, the most famous of which was the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 for his discover of the Theory of Relativity.

In 1933, Einstein renounced his German citizenship and moved to the United States to take the position of Professor of Theoretical Physics at Princeton. Thereafter, he became an American citizen.

Einstein’s statement about his city of birth is unforgotten and often cited: “The city of birth will be as much a unique part of your life as your descent from your mother. We owe part of our being to our city of birth. Therefore I have grateful memories of Ulm as it represents a liaison of refined artistic tradition and simple, healthy character.” Albert Einstein died on April 18, 1955 in Princeton, New Jersey.
